There’s a question worth asking anyone who ends up leading: what was it about them early on that pointed in that direction? We sat down with Alissa Gamble, the owner of Minegar Gamble, to talk about exactly that, the qualities people noticed in her long before real estate was ever in the picture.

Her answer started in childhood. As Alissa tells it, she was the firstborn, the oldest of several cousins, and the only girl in a family with four brothers on her dad’s side. Surrounded by all that energy, she grew up strong-willed, opinionated, and competitive, the kind of kid who naturally ended up leading the group of cousins who spent every weekend together.

People around her kept saying she’d make a good attorney, mostly because she was never short on an opinion and had always been sure of herself.

When we asked which of those qualities she’s leaned on most to build the career she has, she didn’t hesitate. Her assertiveness. That drive to make a decision quickly and move on it is, in her words, what’s carried her.

But the most honest part of the conversation was what she said next. Alissa described a second side of her personality that balances the first: she’s fast, but she’s also calm. “My assertiveness wants me to jump off the building without my pants on, let alone the wings built”, she put it, and that’s exactly the impulse she’s learned to hold back. “Move too fast without thinking it through”, she said, and the people around you get whiplash. Her calm lets her pull back on her assertiveness, check herself, and avoid having to self-correct after the fact. It’s a rare combination, the speed of someone impatient with the steadiness to manage it.
